EMIGRATION TO AMERICA

In 1881, Niels, and Mary
packed up their small family, Chris was three, Carrie five,
and Hans one, and set out for the United States of to America. Mary sewed each of
the boy little sailor suits with brass buttons. All of the children got new wooden shoes.
They went
across the North Sea to the East coast of England. They went to London and
spent weeks on Holiday. The new wooden shoes made Chris's feet hurt and he got
blisters from walking around London. People would stop them on the street and ask
where
they got their clothes. They traveled to Liverpool, England by train and stayed there
a matter of days. They boarded a large ship, one of the Connor Liners. Chris thought they
proable came steerage but could remember the children had a cabin and
their parents had
another. They pickup 100 Irish.
They ran into a bad storm, water splashed over the deck of the boat. The Irish, who was
sleeping on the deck, hollered and yelled and woke everyone up. Chris was very frightened.
An old Danish sailor was on board who was also scared because of the Irish yelling the
boat was sinking. The old sailor went down to the engine room and the pumps were
working fine and there was no danger. He came back and talked to Neils. The
family tried
to go back to sleep but the Irish continued to holler and yell through out the night. Chris
thought they had been drinking too much as they all brought Irish Whiskey with them. It
took 6-7 days to arrive in New York.
They passed through the Eire Canal, the banks so close you could almost reach out and
touch them. The grass was very green and looked good to little Chris. They went into the
Great Lakes until they got to Deluth, Minn. There they got off the
boat to go to Fargo,
South Dakota, by rail.(Dakota Territory at the time) They was tied up for several days
because of a flood that had washed out the rails. The Railroad put them up in a Hotel.
Chris is not sure of what the date was but
does remember playing on the green grass with
Hans and Carrie.
They then went on to Dell Rapids, South Dokota, where. Mary Williamson's brother
Christian Simonsen, lived there. He owned 160 Acres in Moody County, a homestead.
Neils took a homestead land of 80 acres, which there was a mistake in survey and there
was only 53 acres, in Minnehaha County. Neils built a small frame home, two rooms at
first, the biggest being 12 feet x 14 feet. Later an old schoolhouse was
bought and moved
onto the house and made 2 small bedrooms and a living room. (Chris had gone to school
in this old schoolhouse for a while.) Neils farmed and made out all right for a while.
Niels Kristian Vilhelmsen, left Denmark with
his young family in search of a better life.
They homesteaded in South Dakota. He traveled working at grist mills. He sharpened the
large grinding stones and was in great demand leaving his family for weeks at a time to run
his 155 acre homestead.
They lived for 15 years in South Dakota, and then the family
moved to Utah. All his family moved except Carrie, who had died in Dakota. They settled
in Pleasant Grove, Utah, in what was called Monkey town. The area was settled by Swedes
and
Danes who all spoke their native tongue causing other folks to say it sounded like
chattering monkeys.
Nels C. Williamson became a citizen of the USA, and with that came a name change by a
judge. The judge said Vilhelmsen was too
hard to spell and no one would be able to do so.
The Family name then became Williamson. Nels also died in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He is
buried next to his wife Mary in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Chris and his two wives,
Nena and her husband
and Sarah are all buried in the same plot.
